In Your Corner Behavioral Health and Wellness Joins Suicide Awareness Saturday at American Legion Post 39 in Gilbert
East Valley behavioral health clinic staffs resource booth at veteran suicide prevention event, with more community events planned
GILBERT, Ariz. — July 26, 2026 — In Your Corner Behavioral Health and Wellness, an East Valley behavioral health clinic founded by Alicia Shields, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC, took part in Suicide Awareness Saturday at American Legion Merrell-Mitchell Post 39 on July 25, staffing a resource and outreach booth connecting veterans and their families with mental health care.
The post-hosted event brought veterans, families, and community members together for a day centered on veteran suicide prevention, including raffles and volunteer-led activities (American Legion Post 39 newsletter). That same evening, the Gilbert Water Tower was lit teal and purple for Veteran Suicide Prevention Awareness at the request of Post 39 (Town of Gilbert).
At the In Your Corner booth, clinic staff met one-on-one with attendees to talk through warning signs, answer questions about what treatment actually looks like, and provide direct referral pathways for anyone ready to take a next step. Conversations covered post-traumatic stress, substance use recovery, medication management, and the practical barriers that keep people from starting care — insurance, scheduling, and knowing who to call first.
"Veterans shouldn't have to go looking for help — help should show up where they already are," said Alicia Shields, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC, founder of In Your Corner Behavioral Health and Wellness. "Post 39 is a place built on trust and shared experience. Being in that room, having real conversations instead of handing out brochures, is how we close the gap between needing care and getting it. If one veteran left Saturday knowing exactly who to call on their worst day, the whole event was worth it."
Suicide is the leading issue facing the veteran community, and the American Legion's national Be the One mission works to reduce veteran suicide and remove the stigma attached to asking for mental health support (The American Legion). The rate of suicide among veterans is more than 50 percent higher than among non-veteran adults (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs).
In Your Corner Behavioral Health and Wellness offers therapy, psychiatric medication management, case management for veterans, substance use counseling and peer support, PTSD group therapy for veterans, workplace mental health programs, and consulting services across Mesa and the greater East Valley.
Saturday's booth is part of an ongoing community outreach effort by the clinic, which plans to attend and host additional events across the East Valley in the coming months. Dates will be announced at inyourcorneraz.com.
Merrell-Mitchell Post 39, established in 1935 and located at 206 N. Gilbert Road in historic downtown Gilbert, serves veterans and military personnel from all branches of the Armed Forces (American Legion Post 39).
